In 2022, the National Addiction and HIV Data Archive Program (NAHDAP) at ICPSR organized a virtual 2-day workshop to foster discussion among organizations engaged in providing access to confidential data and establishing best practices around secure management of confidential data. Organizations managing confidential data utilize differing standards and approaches to mitigate disclosure risks and have a stake in these discussions as the modal means of accessing data are decentralized across many organizations. The workshop brought together organizations working in this space from all around the world to share approaches to addressing common challenges encountered, and improving models of access. The articles in this special issue are reflect those discussions.
